What It Is:
NexGard is a vet‑prescribed oral chewable tablet designed to treat and prevent flea and tick infestations in dogs and puppies. It’s beef‑flavored and palatable, so most dogs will eat it like a treat.

Active Ingredient:

• Afoxolaner, an isoxazoline‑class insecticide/acaricide that targets fleas and ticks by affecting their nervous system, leading to their death.

• Adult fleas — kills fleas quickly once they bite.

• Ticks — protects against multiple species including American dog tick, black‑legged tick, brown dog tick, etc.

• In some use cases, vets also use it for mite infestations like demodectic or sarcoptic mange (off‑label use under vet guidance).

🐾 How It Works

• Monthly dose: Give one chewable once every month.

• The tablet can be given directly or mixed with food — dogs usually accept it because of the beef flavor.

• Works by killing adult fleas and ticks after they begin feeding on your dog, helping reduce infestations over time.

🐶 Dosage / Strengths

NexGard tablets come in different strengths based on dog weight — for example:

• ~11.3 mg for 2 – 4 kg dogs

• ~28.3 mg for dogs >4 – 10 kg

• ~68 mg for dogs >10 – 25 kg

• ~136 mg for dogs >25 – 50 kg
  (And combinations for heavier dogs.)

⚠️ Important Safety Notes

❗ For dogs only — NexGard is not appropriate for cats. Using dog‑specific NexGard on cats can be dangerous.
❗ Not typically evaluated for pregnant, lactating, or very young puppies (< 8 weeks) unless a vet specifically prescribes it.
❗ Can cause mild side effects like vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or itching in some dogs.
❗ Always use under veterinary guidance — especially for dogs with neurological histories (e.g., seizures).
